Earth Day 2025: Protecting Biodiversity Together
Every year, we look for new ways to reduce our impact, protect the alpine environment, and preserve the natural beauty of the mountain for generations to come. From responsible travel practices and trail stewardship to community engagement and climate advocacy, we are proud to play our part in safeguarding this incredible place we call home. After all, we share this land with a rich and diverse ecosystem—and it’s our responsibility to ensure that this environment remains healthy and thriving for the generations who follow.
This Earth Day, we’re honouring that commitment with a weekend of action, education, and celebration—and we invite you to be a part of it.
The 2025 Theme: Open Your Eyes to Biodiversity
Each year, Earth Day Canada promotes a nationwide campaign to raise awareness and encourage participation in environmental initiatives. The theme for 2025 is an invitation to protect biodiversity by opening our eyes to the natural world around us.
From our backyards to alpine meadows, biodiversity surrounds us—and this year, we're being called to appreciate, preserve, and protect it. We invite you to learn more about what Big White is doing year-round to protect biodiversity and reduce our environmental footprint—and how you can be part of it.
Join the conversation online using #Biodiversity and stay connected with us as we continue to explore and protect the natural world, we all share.

Big White’s Earth Day Celebration: Community Clean-Up Weekend
Help us take action with our annual Community Clean-Up Weekend on June 21 and 22. We’re inviting our entire mountain community and visitors to come together for two days of hands-on action and celebration.
This weekend is about more than just picking up litter—it's a chance to reconnect with nature, support fire safety, learn about our local ecosystem, and celebrate the vibrant community that makes Big White special.
The Big White Fire Department will be leading a full day of Fire Smart assessments and games in the Village. This engaging and educational event is designed to help families learn about wildfire safety while enjoying interactive activities.
Chipping services in Happy Valley will also continue throughout the day. All are welcome to participate, whether you're a property owner preparing for summer or a visitor interested in learning more about fire-smart practices.
Backing the Okanagan Forest Task Force
Big White Ski Resort is committed to supporting the Okanagan Forest Task Force (OKTF)—a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization founded in August 2016 by a group of outdoor enthusiasts who were deeply concerned about the rising problem of illegal dumping in our forests, recreation areas, and along natural waterways.
Since its founding, the OKTF has made tremendous progress in restoring damaged sites and protecting the integrity of our region’s landscapes. Their work ensures that the Okanagan’s forests, trails, and waterways remain clean, safe, and accessible for future generations. We proudly call on other businesses and individuals across the Okanagan to join us in supporting this vital grassroots movement. By standing together, we can amplify the impact of the Task Force’s mission and help protect the natural spaces that define and sustain our region.

Explore Big White’s Biodiversity
Big White isn’t just a winter playground—it’s home to stunning alpine meadows and diverse mountain wildlife. During the summer, the landscape bursts into a kaleidoscope of wildflowers, offering a breathtaking display that changes weekly as different blossoms bloom throughout the season.
Our hiking trails are a great way to witness this natural wonder. Be sure to download our Wildflowers Field Guide and keep an eye out for varieties unique to British Columbia’s alpine regions.
Looking for something even more interactive? Bring your binoculars and join us for birdwatching. Along our trails, you’ll find newly installed birdhouses for local species like the Stellar’s Jay, Whiskey Jack, Red-Tailed Hawk, and Pine Siskin.
Our summer season kicks off on June 26, and we invite you to return and experience the biodiversity of Big White up close. Hike through colourful meadows, listen for birdsong in the trees, and take in panoramic views while treading lightly and respectfully. Share your discoveries with us on social media by tagging @summerbigwhite on Instagram and Facebook.

Protecting the Mountain, Together
Earth Day is a reminder that protecting the planet starts at home—and here at Big White, home means the mountain we all love. Whether you're joining the clean-up, participating in Fire Smart activities, or simply enjoying the biodiversity on a summer hike, every action counts. Together, we can make a lasting impact on our community and the environment.
Let’s celebrate Earth Day the Big White way—through action, appreciation, and stewardship of our beautiful alpine home.
Staying at Big White This Winter? Here’s How We’re Making Your Trip More Sustainable
Sustainability is woven into every part of the guest experience at Big White Central Reservations. From eco-conscious operations to energy-efficient infrastructure, we’re committed to responsible travel. Our initiatives include participation in the Waterwise Program for water conservation, the use of environmentally friendly cleaning products, biodegradable and paraben-free toiletries, and EcoLogoTM certified bathroom and facial tissue. We operate recycling and refundable collection programs that support local schools and community groups, utilize low-energy LED lighting throughout our facilities, and recently constructed a new, energy-efficient Central Reservations building. Our airport shuttle service also helps reduce vehicle traffic to and from the mountain. These efforts reflect our belief that every aspect of the resort experience—from lodging to transportation—should align with our environmental values.
