Embracing the Spirit of Community and Adventure: Why Fiv'r Fridays Are More Than Just a Race
This weekly bike race series is a beloved tradition where riders of all levels gather, eager to test their skills down the mountain’s rugged terrain. However, it’s not merely the adrenaline rush that draws participants. The event is a celebration of resilience, and the sheer joy of mountain biking, all while supporting a worthy cause. Proceeds from this summer series are being collected for the Mountain Bikers of the Central Okanagan (MTBco) a progressive, volunteer-driven, not-for-profit trail organization that builds and maintains trails while advocating for the mountain biking community in Kelowna and the Central Okanagan.
“Non-profit trail societies like MTBCO are the backbone of both mountain biking and trail networks in any region throughout BC,” explained Assistant Patrol Director Patrick Shier. “We believe in giving back to the mountain bike community in the best way possible. By supporting MTBCO, we hope to see central Okanagan flourish with sustainable trails for biking.”
Andrew Daly, Sales Director at Big White Ski Resort, emphasizes that the primary goal of this series is to foster rider development, build confidence and have fun.
"This year's newly introduced format, featuring the 'Friendly Fiv'r League' and the 'Flat Out Fiv'r League,' reflects our commitment to inclusivity and growth within the sport,” said Daly. “The Friendly Fiv'r League is a nod to those just beginning their racing journey or looking to develop their skills in a supportive environment."
For many, this event isn’t just about competition—it's about creating a space where youth, women, and emerging riders can shine. In the Friendly Fiv'r League, riders find a community that prioritizes participation over victory, fostering an environment where everyone has the chance to develop and grow.
Meanwhile, the Flat Out Fiv'r League caters to seasoned, adrenaline-fueled riders who seek out the most challenging trails. It’s a league that emphasizes not just winning, but the thrill of conquering difficult descents and pushing beyond personal limits.
Beyond the bike, Fiv'r Fridays is about connection—between riders, their families, and the broader community. The $5 registration fee makes the event accessible to anyone with a bike and a bit of courage, while the post-race gatherings at The Woods patio provide a perfect setting to celebrate the day’s achievements. Here, the focus is less on accolades and more on the shared experiences that bring people together, reminding us all that, in this fast-paced world, moments of genuine connection are priceless.
