So Long, Summer! Another Season Wraps Up at Big White Ski Resort
With the resort open each weekend this summer, the mountain was bathed in sunshine around 70% of the time. The few days that were rainy, only fueled the alpine meadows, “With all the rain we received in June and early July, Big White Ski Resort was a meadow of wildflowers in the alpine all summer long,” says Michael J. Ballingall, Senior VP at Big White Ski Resort Ltd. “The colors, the smell and the questions kept on coming every day. We can only hope that it’s repeated next year as our hikers and bikers were enthralled.”
Throughout the summer, over 350 people participated in the three installments of our new Geo-Hiking scavenger hunt. This year, people searched for the residences of 12 different fairies.
New this year at Bike Big White was the Friday Night Freeride Sessions, an all ages activity that had beginners and pros alike hitting the features at the Slopestyle Centre, the only course of its kind in Canada that’s open to the public. Groms – riders under the age of 15 – from right here in the Okanagan, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and everywhere in between, visited Big White to progress their skills, and get the chance to meet, ride and learn from professional slopestyle athletes. On average, 20 people showed up for these sessions, with a pro there three-quarters of the time. Big Air, Little Riders >>
Bike Big White’s Toonie Races on Friday Nights were also a huge hit, raising nearly $500 in support of the local Kelowna trails through our friends at MTBco.
In August, we had a visit from the Kootenay Adaptive Sport Association (KASA), where adaptive mountain bikers from the area had the chance to experience Big White’s down hill trails, and our Bike Park staff and lift operations team had an opportunity to learn more about adaptive mountain biking.
Due to COVID-19, Big White’s Food and Beverage Department expanded outdoor patios and introduced a new online ordering system for the five restaurants that were open over the past two months.
All of us at Big White Ski Resort want to thank those of you who came out to enjoy the super, natural beauty of the mountain and for respecting the rules and protocols enforced to ensure everyone’s health and safety. Here’s to a fantastic winter season of skiing, snowboarding and playing at Big White! Hope to see you all again this winter.
