Celebrating 25 Years of the NEBS Banked Slalom
The Neil Edgeworth Banked Slalom (NEBS), now celebrating its 25th anniversary, holds the title as the nation's most enduring snowboarding event. It's a gathering that transcends age, skill level, uniting the community from the young snowboarders to the seasoned pros. Among them, former Olympian and Big White Ambassador Tess Critchlow, stands as a testament to the event's caliber, where legends and newcomers alike carve the slopes side by side. This convergence of talent and passion at NEBS perfectly captures the true essence and communal spirit of snowboarding.
A Legacy at TELUS Park
Flynn Seddon, Director of Terrain Parks and Outdoor Events at Big White, explains in an article by KelownaNow the spirit of the event, "We don’t call it a competition. We refer to it as a gathering, and the amount of people who are coming each year is growing.” Seddon feels that NEBS is truly a family of snowboarders, ”For people to get involved in and just have a good time remembering friends, hanging out and meeting new people."
Big White has been a pillar of snowboarding culture since 1986, fostering the sport through thick and thin. The banked slalom at Big White, first run in the winter of 1987/88, has grown into a hallmark event. Its significance was magnified in 1997 when it was renamed in honor of Neil Edgeworth, a beloved snowboarder who tragically lost his life in an avalanche.
The success of the NEBS banked slalom is a testament to the dedication from BC Snowboard and the collective effort of all participants. Their commitment ensures that the spirit of the event and the essence of snowboarding are preserved and celebrated with each gathering.
