Futureproofing Big White Ski Resort: Embracing Growth with a State-of-the-Art Water Reservoir

Posted On: August 02, 2023 |
Exciting developments are underway at Big White Ski Resort as the construction of a cutting-edge water reservoir takes shape, promising to secure the resort's future for years to come.

Visitors have been curious about the new addition underway this summer, often mistaking it for a skating rink. However, the reality is much more impressive – an expansive, concrete in-ground water reservoir designed to hold an astounding 2,800,000 litres of the renowned Okanagan Champagne powder once it melts.

The ambitious project comes with a price tag of $2.5 million and is a crucial part of Big White's forward-thinking growth strategy. In conjunction with the expansion of the Blackforest development, the provincial authorities have mandated that the resort must have a water reservoir of sufficient capacity to combat two structure fires with treated water. To meet this requirement, Big White is drawing water directly from the pristine Rhonda Lake, nestled at the base of the Cliff, approximately 6,600 feet above sea level, containing about 75 million gallons of fresh, clean mountain water.

The water from Rhonda Lake will continue to be sourced, treated, and then safely stored in the new reservoir tank, ensuring the resort retains its reputation for possessing some of the purest and freshest water globally. Maurice Valcourt, Vice President of Utilities at Big White Ski Resort, proudly emphasized the exceptional quality of their water. Big White's water stands unparalleled with minimal mineral content, no carcinogens, organics, or turbidity fluctuations from developing areas, and protection from natural contamination by solid ice and snowpack during winter.

Notably, the resort took significant steps in 2017 by investing in the treatment of Lake Paul, located at the base of the Powder Chair. Now seamlessly integrated into the Big White water system, Lake Paul contributes an additional 60 million gallons of pristine water for the benefit of the resort's residents and guests.

This infrastructure enhancement is not just about catering to the present but also securing the future. As the resort's popularity continues to soar, the upgraded water reservoir will ensure a steady and abundant water supply, accommodating the growing needs of both visitors and residents.

Ecora Engineering and Resource Group are hard at work on this pivotal project, which is expected to be completed well before the upcoming ski season in October 2023. Big White Ski Resort takes pride in its commitment to the environment, the quality of its amenities, and the experience it offers to all who visit. With this futureproofing initiative, the resort remains at the forefront of innovation, assuring an extraordinary mountain experience for generations to come.
