Big White Snow Hosts

Posted On: March 10, 2012 |
We had some friends arrive from out of town who’d never skied Big White before, and with the glorious powder that was falling, one of them, who shall remain nameless, decided he couldn’t wait for the rest of us to get going and off he went.

Did he ask for a map? Did he have a clue where he was going? Thinking he could do the ski-in and ski-out from the door thing on his own, off he went.

Thankfully he met up with one of the Snow Hosts, who are greeting people and handing out maps at the tops of the Ridge Rocket, Bullet Express and at the top and bottom of the gondola every day between 9 and 10am each day.

But having a map isn’t the same as having someone who knows the hill show you around. It can take a bit of time to figure out where the runs that are best suited for your style are.

That’s where the Big White Snow Host program comes in to play.

If you’re one of those map-challenged people and would like to really learn the mountain and where all the fresh powder is hidden, then you’re welcome to join one of the free Snow Host mountain tours that leave from the Village Centre every morning at 10:30am.

Carlan and Lin Silha are two members of the Snow Hosts team who have been doing this for more than a decade. “I love meeting all the international people,” said Carlan, noting that they still correspond with people they’ve met all over the world.

“We absolutely love this mountain,” said Lin, “and so volunteering as Snow Hosts is a true labor of love.”

One of their favorite things to do is take people off the runs to explore the powder in the trees. “In Europe, you can’t ski in the trees and have to ski on the runs, so for our European guests, they’re thrilled to ski through the Enchanted Forest,” said Carlan.

Guests are divided into groups according to ability or families who want to stick together can usually do so with their own Snow Host, so we recommend you arrive at least 5 to 10 minutes ahead of time.

It’s also a great option for those who already know the mountain but would love some company.  You never know, you just might discover somewhere new to play!
